The Duel Is Complete!

December 27th, 2006

Winner's Trophy

Congratulations to Jonathan Grynspan, winner of the Holiday Cocoa Duel! Jonathan's entry Snowplane generated $469.57 in charitable donations to Child's Play in six days. And all of this is for an app that Jonathan had just three days to create!

Not too shabby, Jonathan!

But even more important than charity is beer. :) With his maddd Cocoa-fu programming skillzzz, Jonathan has earned $20 worth of beer (or some other gift of the same value) from each of the other developers who've taken part in the duel (and one organizer who never got around to writing an app). I guess we know who's going to have a Happy New Years!

Congratulations to everyone who has participated! This has been a very, very fun charity drive, and it couldn't have happened without all of your hard work. And more importantly, we've generated $2381.43 of charitable donations in six days!

And last but not least, even though the duel is done, you can always still donate to the developer's charities. There was actually one person who donated $50 to every developer's charity rather than just picking one. That's some pretty serious class right there...

Welcome to A Cocoa Holiday Duel

December 22nd, 2006

What happens when you give a bunch of Macintosh developers three days to write a holiday themed application for charity? You get A Holiday Cocoa Duel (At Ten Paces)!

Each dev has written a small holiday app and is providing it for free, with source code included. Check them out using the menu on the left. If you like a developer's application, please donate to his charity.

At the end of the event, all of the devs will reward the developer who's charity has received the most donations with a small gift!

We're Live!

December 21st, 2006

The downloads are now live, and donations are up and running! So check out the insanely cool stuff that the generous devs participating in this project have created, and if you like what they've done, please donate to the charity they've specified!

I'm really impressed with what these guys have come up with in just three days. Über-codërs!

Spread the word! More eyeballs equals more charity donations!

Q 'n' A

December 18th, 2006

A few questions have come up over and over, so it's probably good to just answer 'em once here.

Is midnight on Wednesday the hour between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, or between Wednesday night and Thursday morning?
It's the hour between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Does my app have to be snow?
No, anything with a holiday theme is great. I just used Snö as an example.
Can you elaborate on setting up my charity?
Just pick one that has an online donation page, and I'll set up the rest. I'm just going to put up a gateway page that asks the user how much she is donating, and to which to charity, purely on the honor system.
Do I need to release my code on sourceforge?
Nope, just make the source available. I'm probably going to put mine on Google's OSS site. In fact, if there's some overriding reason why you can't open source it, that's fine too.
How will the winner be determined?
Whoever's charity receives the highest dollar amount of donations wins!
But I don't like beer! And I'm underaged!
No problem, I just used beer as an example. Losers will gift the winner any present around $20 or two six-packs of good beer.

The response so far has been great, and we've got an excellent pool of developers already, with a few more still in the pipe! So if you're on the fence, jump off and !

The Challenge!

December 17th, 2006

Welcome to A Holiday Cocoa Duel! The duel is a charity event in which Mac OS X developers battle it out for supremacy (and beer). The developers write small holiday-themed applications, and you pick which one you like most by donating to that developer's charity of choice!

Here's the scoop: The duel is a mix between Ironcoder and Snö. Entrants will:

  • write some small holiday-themed OS X app similar to ittpoi's Snö, and release it as open-source
  • commit to purchasing a gift of a $20 value (or two six packs of good beer) for the winner
  • set up donations for the charity of the entrant's choice in the entrant's name

Users vote on which entry they like the most by donating to that entrant's charity. At the end, the winner is picked by whichever charity got the most donations. And the winner gets the gift pool from the other devs.

If you'd like to participate as a developer, all you need to do is have your app ready for download by midnight MST of Wednesday the 20th. that you're participating as soon as possible, and which charity you'd like your users to donate to, and we'll get you set up.

We'll count up the donations on midnight MST of Tuesday, December 26th and pick the winner!
